Vitamin C and Diarrhea... Why?

For a lot of people, taking Vitamin C can result in you spending way more time in the bathroom, than you care to admit. This is actually a good thing.

Vitamin C is a detoxifier, so it is doing exactly what it is supposed to do- rid the body of toxins. You are not losing your bowels, you are just cleaning yourself from the inside out. Vitamin C is used up in proportion to how many toxins have built up in your body. So if you smoke, or live an an area where the air and water is not so clean, your body will use up way more Vitamin C to remove it than someone who lives in a less toxic environment.

Another thing that causes someone to run to the john is when they suffer from some kind of swollen bowl syndrome, colitis, ileitis, Chrone's, IBS, etc... once they start taking Vitamin C, their bowels start to reduce their swelling almost immediately. When this happens, all that bacteria that was trapped in the folds of the digestive tract get released, and your body will begin to remove it ASAP. You can still take Vitamin C, and you should, as this is a sign of repair, but just cut back to what is comfortable to make the symptoms more bearable. Once you get to the other side, and your system has been purged, you will feel so much better, experience less bloating, and be able to digest foods more effectively again. Better yet, eat foods that contain Vitamin C so you will be able to get the full range of nutrients that calibrate your digestive system.

This detoxifying and anti-histamine effect of vitamin C has long been known by the medical community, but with the easy access of over the counter drugs, and cortisone shots, the public switched their focus; and responsibility off themselves and on to the quick fix that the pharmaceutical industry has to offer. In the long run, you will be much better served by taking nutrition instead of drugs. How much Vitamin C should be taken is always the question, but rest assured, any excess is lost in the urine so you can't overdose on it. If you do experience diarrhea just be sure to drink plenty of vitamin water to replace lost liquids.

If you are a person that has a reaction to taking Vitamin C, start with 250 mg at each meal, then go from there as you can tolerate it. In the natural, humans, moneys and guinea pigs are the only mammals that don’t make their own Vitamin C. All the others that do, make it consistently at about 35 mg for every pound that they weigh. So for a 150 pound person that equates to about 5 grams a day. For someone not used to this, it is not recommended, but it won't hurt you. Personally, when I am working out and producing a lot of lactic acid in my muscles, I will take as many as 10 grams a day to help move it out, but I have been doing this all my life.

Getting healthy again is a process. Like going into surgery, we wouldn't get up off the operating table before the doctor closes the incision- If you really want to get better, you will have to jump a few hurdles. Taking Vitamin C is always on of the most common places to start. If you suffer from any of the things mentioned in this article, feel free to contact us for a FREE Health Assessment.
