Aspirin

Aspirin is part of the salicylates family of chemicals. They have been known for centuries, first recorded by Hippocrates in the 5th century, B.C. He wrote about a bitter powder extracted from willow bark that could ease aches and pains and reduce fevers. Today’s research has shown that part of the willow bark that produces these results is called ‘salicin’, hence the name ‘salicylates’.
When the body experiences pain, it sends chemicals called ‘prostaglandins’ to the brain. As aspirin is absorbed into the bloodstream it circulates through the entire body. Wherever it encounters ‘prostaglandins’, it will interfere with their production and thus neutralize pain.
You could still be experiencing the pain, but your brain just won’t get the message. This is why it is considered a cure-all for aches and pains. However, like all ‘neutralizing’ drugs, they will also interfere with the ‘good chemicals’ that the body needs to recover.
As the body is processing aspirin out of the body, ‘salicin’ is changed into Salicylic acid, a slightly toxic substance that will harm the stomach, liver and kidneys if taken to excess. This is why there is a warning on every package not to exceed the recommended dosage.
This whole digestive process takes about 4 to 6 hours, but even taking it consistently at these intervals will eventually take its toll on the human body.[i]
Side effects from aspirin include upset stomachs, thin blood, and it is now contraindicated for fevers in children because it was found that when aspirin is given to kids with flu, chicken pox, or other viral sicknesses it can cause a potentially deadly problem known as Reye syndrome.[ii]
Aspirin also changes the way your kidneys make urine, it can cause some people to have trouble breathing, and in many circles is considered dangerous at very high doses. BUT, old habits die hard, and aspirin is still distributed widely and thought of as a standard remedy for those who suffer from arthritis, as well as other diseases.
